Giving Supplies a Second Life: My Green Earth’s School Supply Collection
At the end of the school year, in the rush to head out for summer, many perfectly good school supplies often get left behind. This year, My Green Earth (MGE) found a way to give those items new life and purpose. Thanks to the efforts of teachers, parents, and students across multiple schools in May, boxes of unused supplies were collected for redistribution to students in need. Together, the community gathered and distributed over $2,200 worth of brand new or like-new supplies to put back into the hands of learners.
What We Collected
Crayons, glue sticks, and classroom essentials: 900 items
Children’s and Young Adult Books: 70 books
Paper products: notebooks, binders, folders, and more
Backpacks and storage items: pencil boxes, bookbags, etc.
Classroom tools: pencil sharpeners, scissors, and related items
Writing instruments: pencils, pens, and markers
Where Supplies Are Going Next
While the supplies have already been distributed to local students in Title 1 schools, we still have an additional $1,500 worth of supplies in storage—primarily books. These will soon find new homes through Books for Africa and in Little Free Libraries located in low-income neighborhoods, ensuring they continue to inspire and empower young learners.
Why It Matters
This project highlights how small acts of sharing can ripple outward into lasting community impact. By keeping perfectly good supplies out of landfills and putting them into children’s hands, we’re not only promoting sustainability but also ensuring that every child has the tools they need to thrive.
