The Bigger Picture: Why This Swap Matters

Each year in the U.S., an estimated 35 million costumes are thrown away, most of them after being worn only once. Because about 83% of those costumes are made from non-recyclable plastics and synthetics, they add up to nearly 2,000 tons of plastic waste destined for landfills. That plastic can linger in the environment for 20 to 200 years before breaking down, releasing microplastics and pollution along the way.

Community swaps like ours are one simple but powerful way to make a difference. By giving costumes a second life, we not only keep them out of landfills but also help reduce the demand for new, plastic-based costumes that often end up in the trash after one night of fun. Costume swaps also bring people together, offering families an affordable, sustainable alternative that builds community while easing the strain on both wallets and the planet. Each costume reused is one less manufactured, purchased, and discarded—a small but meaningful step toward addressing the textile waste crisis.
