Giving Costumes a Second Life: Reused and Reimagined

This week, My Green Earth and No More Liddering (NML) teamed up to make Halloween a little greener and a lot more community-driven. Together, we turned the simple idea of costume reuse into a joyful, eco-conscious celebration that brought families, volunteers, and local partners across metro Atlanta together.

Thanks to generous donations from schools, businesses, and churches throughout the region, our Community Costume Swap gave more than 350 costumes a second life! That’s roughly 600 pounds of textiles kept out of the landfill, saving water, oil, and energy that would have been needed to produce new costumes, while also ensuring more children could experience the joy of dressing up.

Shared Effort, Shared Impact

Hosted at the beautiful Stitched Gifts in Marietta, the event offered families the chance to browse racks of donated costumes, find new favorites, and enjoy a sense of community connection. As a fundraiser, all proceeds go directly toward supporting environmental initiatives like local food forests and global eco-education “lid kits” in Kenya.

Students Leading with Spirit

Our incredible interns from Wheeler High School and Pope High School brought contagious energy to the event. Not only did they host costume collections, they helped sort and organize the event and even dressed in donated costumes to encourage drivers to support the event. Their creativity and enthusiasm transformed the event into something truly special.

Extending the Joy

In the spirit of continuing this cycle of reuse and community giving, all leftover costumes have been donated to Fair Oaks Elementary and local nonprofits that serve families in need. These costumes will be distributed to children who might not otherwise have access to them, spreading both sustainability and joy beyond the event.

A Partnership with Purpose

Our co-hosts at No More Liddering (NML) share My Green Earth’s belief that sustainability works best when it’s creative, local, and fun. NML’s mission to reduce single-use plastic waste and transform discarded materials—like bottle caps and lids—into meaningful public art installations is a natural complement to MGE’s circular-living approach. Together, we’re proving that environmental action can be both impactful and enjoyable.
